In his speech at the Westin Harbour Castle, Yushchenko said Ukraine is emerging as a modern power and
makes direct appeal to Ukrainian Canadians to invest in the homeland. May 28, 2008.

It is a tremendous honour to introduce to you a man of vision, a man whom history will remember as a
first leader of modern and truly democratic Ukraine – President Viktor Yuschenko.

We believe that strategic goal of Ukraine is Ukraine’s accession to European Union and North Atlantic
Alliance. Look at our history. Has it not told you anything? When over the last ninety years Ukraine has
declared its independence for six times, and five out of six, it lost it. What was it we were lacking to make sure
in 1918, 1919, 1939, 1941 we can assert ourselves as a sovereign country with its own borders. We lacked just
one thing – international guarantee, for the eternity of our sovereignty.

We want to live like Europe does, with an assistant of democratic, social, financial, and ethical values.
And the majority of our nation responds positively to these priorities. And then one question arises. If we have a
common system of values, obviously we have to have a common way of defending them, like must have a
common security policy. We can’t just share values and not share the way of defending them.

I would like to say that we (value) appreciate very highly the significant and unique support that Canada
provides in putting this approach together. Every time that I was speaking in Canada I say – the behavior, the
assessment, the gesture that was demonstrated by the Prime Minister of Canada when he spoke to summit of
NATO, that is the position of the government, of the country that clearly decided make the decision on this point
and that decision was the clear support for Ukraine, was declared clearly, unequivocally and in the most
appropriate moment for Ukraine. I would like to thank once again, publicly.

I’m convinced that today we are talking about Ukraine and the phenomenon of Ukraine, that I as an
economist can tell you that it will be one of modern economies in Eastern Europe; this is going to be the
economy that will bring about the most astonishing possibilities and opportunities in the next couple of years.

The next meeting of European Union will be saying (they will be saying) – look! We have Ukraine
integrated here and there, in space, in aviation, and gas, and power production. We have everything integrated.
So then logically they say why Ukraine is not the member of European Union. That will back the question. We
will say – we are ready. Another words, this integration, we are talking about, the applied integration, is doing a
great job, it’s the shortest possible way (shortcut) to the final integration, political integration, and therefore, for
us it’s a great honour and a great responsibility to host properly the European championship finals. Not only
financial speaking, but also to do tourist infrastructure, roads, sports related construction, but we also would like
      to win the final.
