systematization and analysis which will reveal its weaknesses and
methods of their elimination and that will lead to the normalization
of the terminology. Followers of this view emphasise the
shakiness, fuzziness of the borders between the terminology and
terminological system. The difference between these categories is
based on the following principles:
1. Terminology is a combination that has developed
spontaneously, and terminological system has developed
consciously (not intentionally).
2. Terminology is a notion that is on the verge
between linguistics and terminology science, terminological
system is the notion of only terminology science because it
satisfies the increasing requirements for an ideal term.
3. Terminology is a non-ordered or partially ordered
set, and terminological system is an organized entity where each
term has its specific site.
4. Terminology includes terms, professional words
and phrases, and nomenclature signs but terminological system
consists exclusively of terms.
Thus, a terminology is an organized set of terms that really
exists in life, whereas a terminological system is a perfect
organization. That’s why we may use these terms as synonyms.
3.2 Levels of Terminological System
In terminology science depending on the criterion several
classifications of terms are singled out. According to the logical or
functional criterion (O. Superanska) we distinguish the following
types of terms:
1. Basic terms – terms that are used in almost all scientific
terminologies, for example: system, law, concept, theory, analysis,
synthesis, etc. It should be noted that these terms within a specific
terminology can specify its meaning, with the help of other words
they become more accurate: language system, the laws of
economics, the theory of the language origin.
