LECTURE 3
                                               TERMINOLOGICAL SYSTEM

                                  3.1 Terminology and Terminological System
                                  3.2 Levels of Terminological System
                                  3.3 Semantic Processes in Terminology

                                         Key words: terminology, terminological system,
direct user, intermediaries, basic terms, interbranch terms,
                                   highly specialized terms, terminologisation,
                                   transterminologisation, determinologisation.

                                  3.1 Terminology and Terminological System
All the terms that are functioning in the professional
communication form a certain entity, set. In linguistic works it’s
called a terminology (термінологія) or a terminological system
(термінологічна система). Among the first linguists who talked
about scientific terminologies, we should mention D. Lotte. He
defines terminology as follows: terminology is an ordered set of
the terms as opposed to the non-ordered ones.
Terminology is a polysemic word. Terminology has a
                            twofold meaning:
 a system of words and word combinations that indicate a
number of professional concepts of science, manufacturing,
                            engineering, art, etc.;
 the branch of lexicology that examines the systems of
terms, the principles of their organization, the mechanisms of
terms creation, requirements, and also solves the applied tasks to
organize and codify systems of terms and their equivalents in
                            different languages.
Terminology is currently seen as an art or practice rather
than as a science. Even though it has a well-defined aim, namely to
satisfy the expressive needs of its users, its working methods are
