January 1655 The battle of Ohmativ. The Polish-Tatar army
surrounded Uman’. B. Khmelnytsky together
with the Russian army set out to support.
About 30 thousand people on both sides were
lost. Because of considerable losses, Polish-
Tatar army retreated over the Buh river,
where Polish the Polish command pay Tatars
for assistance with “live goods”. Tatars took
almost 200 thousand captives, having
destroyed 270 settlements.
Summer- The campaign of Ukrainian and Russian
autumn 1655 armies to Halychyna. In the battle of
Horodok the Polish army headed by M.
Pototsky was crushed. In November Cossacks
surrounded Lviv for the second time, but after
being informed about Tatar attack in Podillya,
Ukrainian army had to retreat.
October Truce of Vilna. Russia, concerned about
1656 military successes of Sweden being at war
with the Polish, signed the truce with the
Polish behind the back of Ukraine. Cossack
representatives were not allowed to be present
at negotiations. That fact infuriated B.
Khmelnytsky. To gain Russia’s favour, the
Poles promised to elect the Russian tsar
Oleksiy Mykhailovych to their king.
