ruled by Sviatoslav; 3) Pereyaslav was ruled
by Vsevolod; 4) Smolensk was ruled by
Viacheslav; 5) Volhynia was ruled by Ihor; 6)
Halychyna was given to his grandson
Rostyslav Volodymyrovych. He established
the principle of precedence, the so-called
“seniority” or the principle of “ladder ascent”
or rotation. The principle provided for the
following order of actions: when the throne
became vacant, all below took one step up.
By that the prince intended to prevent
fratricidal war for power.
1054-1073 The rule of so-called triumvirate of
Yaroslav’s elder sons: Iziaslav, Sviatoslav
and Vsevolod.
1068 The defeat of Yaroslavovychy in the battle
with Polovtsians ob the Alta river. The result
was the so-called “I Kyivan revolution”, the
large uprising in Kyiv against Iziaslav
because of his refusal to provide arms for
Kyiv defence. Viche (the popular assembly)
drove prince Iziaslav away and proclaimed
Vsevolod, the captive Polovtsian prince, to
reign. The mass – vox populi appeared on the
political stage of Kyivan Rus for the first
time. Later Iziaslav returned to Kyiv with the
support of Polish troops and dealt shortly with
the rebels.
1072 At the Council in Vyshgorod “Pravda of
Yaroslavychy”a new edition of “Rus’ka
Pravda”, was established. It provided for
stricter penalties for any violation of private
