April The Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine
1998 was officially opened in Kyiv. For the last
time coins had been minted in Kyiv Rus.
January The split of the Rukh of Ukraine in 2 parts:
1999 Ukrainian People’s Rukh was headed by Y.
Kostenko and the People’s Rukh of Ukraine
headed by V. Chornovil.
March, 25 Vyacheslav Chornovil, the Head of the
1999 People’s Rukh of Ukraine, a famous political
figure, died in a car accident under unclarified
circumstances.
October, 31 Elections of the President of Ukraine. The
1999 elections were conducted by two rounds – on
October, 31 and November, 14. 15 candidates
participated in the first round (2 of them
withdrew candidacy later). L. Kuchma, the
valid President of Ukraine (36.5%) and the
CPU leader P. Symonenko (22.3%) entered
the second round. By results of the second
round, L. Kuchma was elected president
(56.2%). P. Symonenko got 37.8%.
December V. Yushchenko, the Head of the National
1999 Bank of Ukraine, was assigned the Prime
Minister
February, 22 The capital punishment was abolished in
2000 Ukraine.
March, V. Yushchenko and Cabinet of Ministers
2000 presented the program "Reforms for
welfare”. The program implementation was
to form anti-crisis conditions and raising of
Ukraine to the level of European states.
April, 16 The All-Ukrainian referendum was
