majority-proportional system. 70.8% of
electors participated in the elections. 30
political parties and blocks took part in the
nationwide multicandidate voting district. The
following parties got the highest quantity of
votes:
1) CPU – 24.6%–84 mandates of a deputy;
2) the Rukh of Ukraine – 9.4%– 32 mandates
of a deputy;
3) the block of the Socialist and Peasant
Parties – 8.6%–29 mandates of a deputy;
4) The Green Party of Ukraine– 5.4%–19
mandates of a deputy;
5) The People’s Democratic Party – 5.0%–17
mandates of a deputy;
6) all-Ukrainian union “Hromada”– 4.7% –17
mandates of a deputy.
In single-seat voting districts the following
deputies were elected:
1) non-party– 11; 2) Communists– 38; 3)
Rukh members – 13; 5) the Agrarian Party –
8;
4) the People’s Democratic Party – 11.
There was not any stable parliamentary
majority formed. On July, 7, 1998 after
numerous meetings and long discussions, O.
Tkachenko, a leader of the Peasant Party,
was elected the Chairman of the Supreme
Council. In January 2000 the constitutional
majority was formed in the Supreme Council
(237 deputies). I. Pliushch was elected the
Chairman of the Supreme Council.
