appearance of electors. The composition of
the deputy corps was as follows:
25% - the CPU; 5.9% - RUKH; 5.3% -The
Peasant Party; 4.1% - The Socialist Party; a
an insignificant number of deputies
represented other parties – URP (Ukrainian
Republican Party), CUN (Congress of
Ukrainian Nationalists), USDP (The
Ukrainian Social-Democratic Party), PDRU
(The Party of Democratic Restoration of
Ukraine) and others. 170 deputies were non-
party.
O. Moroz, a leader of SPU, was elected the
Chairman of the Supreme Council.
June, 16 The Supreme Council assigned V. Masol the
1994 Prime Minister. He had already been the
Chairman of Council of Ministers during
1987-1990 and had to resign under the
pressure of student hunger strike.
June-July 1994 The pre-term elections of the President of
Ukraine. In the first round (June, 26) any of
the candidates did not get 50%+1. In the
second round (July, 10) two candidates were
present: L. Kravchyuk (37.7%) and L.
Kuchma (31.2%). L. Kuchma won having got
52.14%, L. Kravchyuk got 45.06%. The most
substantial support was given to him by
Donbas and the Crimea, southern regions of
Ukraine, as his election program included the
issue of granting the Russian language an
official status, restoration of fraternal
relations with Russia, etc.
