September         P.  Shelest  published  his  book  “Our  Soviet
            1969              Ukraine”,  which  caused  dissatisfaction  of
                              Moscow by its national character.
            January           The  first  issue  of  “Ukrainian  bulletin”,  a
            1970              samizdat  off-censorship  magazine,  saw  the
                              light.  V. Chornovil  became a chief editor. It
                              was  published  in  Lviv  during  1970-72.  Six
                              issues were published.
            January, 15-22  The USSR population census.

            November, 28      The  tragic  death  of  Alla  Horska,  a  public
            1970              figure, a participant of dissident movement, a
                              painter. Her views and active attitude irritated
                              authorities greatly.
            January –May  The  second  wave  of  mass  repressions  in
            1972              Ukraine.  On  January,  30,  1972  Politburo  of
                              CC  CPSU  passed  the  resolution  about
                              decisive  struggle  with  dissident  movement
                              and “samizdat”. Some time later, planned and
                              coordinated  mass  arrests  took  place,  which
                              were  accompanied  by  widespread  searches,
                              persecution  of  dissidents’  families  and
                              friends.  V.  Chornovil,  Y.  Sverstiuk,  I.
                              Svitlychnyi,  I.  Dzyuba,  V.  Stus  and  many
                              more were arrested (more than 200 people).
            May, 25           The  Plenum  of  CC  CPU  discharged  P.
            1972              Shelest  from  the  position  of  the  First
                              Secretary  for  drawbacks  in  the  cause  of
                              “international  education  of  working  class”,
                              “compromising  attitude  towards  nationalism
                              manifestations” and ”excessive propaganda of
                              monuments     to   Ukrainian   nation”.   V.
                              Shcherbytsky, a L. Brezhnev’ personal friend,
