It represents the highest level of translator`s activity and is always performed
with many transformations which help to achieve the ease and beauty of the original
composition. The number of phrases and sentences in the literary translation is never the
same as in the source language work, neither are the same means of expression.
Literary translating often requires linguistic, historical and other inquiries in order
to clarify the obscure places.
To achieve the necessary level of faithfullness the translator has to render fully
the picturesqueness, the literary images, the rhythm and the rhyme, the beauty of
sounding of the original work.
An illustration of this may be Vasylchenko`s translation of Emily Dickinson`s
poem:

A word is dead Слово – сказане –
When it is said, Помирає –
Some say, Дехто вважає.
I say it just Як на мене –
Begins to live Я певно знаю:
That day. Так воно оживає.

IV Basic principles of literary artistic translation

The main of these principles may be defined as follows:
1. To maintain in the target language version all the structural peculiarities of the
work under translation.
2. To hold strictly to the author`s conception.
3. To maintain the main peculiarities of the syntactic organization and stylistic
means of expression of the source language work.
4. To maintain in the version of the target language the fidelity in the means and
ways of the author`s depicting the artistic images and expressivness pertainted
to the source language matter.
5. To avoid deliberate omissions and any other forms of free interpretation unless
required of the source language work.
