SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI. Figure 14-9 illustrates working of a simple
               Web service.
We discussed XML earlier, which is designed especially for web
documents. The Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) is a message-
passing protocol that defines how to send tagged or marked-up data from
one software application to another across a network. Web Services
Description Language (WDSL) is a XML-formatted language. Universal
Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI) is a Web-based
distributed directory that can be used by businesses to list and discover
each other on the Internet. It is similar to a traditional phone book's yellow
and white pages. Web services allow programs written in different
languages on different platforms to communicate with each other and
accomplish various tasks, e.g. transaction processing. In a web service, all
                                                             44
