This occurred several times, and the American who could not understand why the
Frenchman should introduce himself so many times, asked his friend about it. The friend
explained that “Bon appetit” meant “Good appetite”, and the American having understood
his mistake decided to correct it. Next time he was the first at the table, and when the
Frenchman came, he arose, bowed and said, “Bon appetit!” The Frenchman immediately
returned the bow and said: “Watson”.

3. To Eat Or Not To Eat
An Englishman who was on a visit to Italy decided to go back to England. He had only
enough money to pay his ticket back. But he knew that a trip between England and Italy was
short – only two days. That’s why he decided to live without eating during those two days.
So he bought a ticket and got on the ship. When dinner time came he wanted to eat very
much but he told other people he was not hungry. In the evening he wanted to eat still more,
but when he was asked to have supper, he said he wanted to sleep not to eat. The next
morning he could not go without eating. So when dinner time came he went to the dining-
room and ate everything that was put before him. After dinner he went away. In the evening
he ate his supper and asked: “How much must I pay for the dinner and supper?” “But you
paid for everything when you bought the ticket”, answered the waiter.
4. Scottish Appetite
One day four friends were sitting in a restaurant. One of them, a Scotsman, told his
friends he would bet ten shillings that he could eat a turkey and three pounds of sausages.
Of course his friends did not believe this. So the turkey was roasted and put before him on
the table. With great astonishment his friends watched him eating up the bird. And after
some minutes he also swallowed the three pounds of sausages! So they had to pay the
money.
The Scotsman finally drank some glasses of beer and then went home together with
one of his friends. But when they arrived at the front door of his house, the Scotsman said to
his friend: “Please don’t tell my wife that I’ve eaten so much”.
“Why not?” asked his friend.
“Because she would give me no supper!” the Scotsman answered.
5. Good Manners
Jack invited his new friend Tommy to dinner at his house. Tom’s mother was very
anxious about her little son’s table manners.
“Tommy, don’t eat off the knife. And if your food is too hot don’t blow on it. And don’t
talk with your mouth full”, she told him.
When Tommy returned he said: “I remembered what you told me, Mum, and I did only
one thing wrong”.
“What did you do, Tommy?”
“Oh, when I wanted to cut my meat it fell off the plate on the floor”.
“Oh, my dear, what did you do then?”
“I said, “That’s always the way with tough meat” and picked it up from the floor”.

1. Butter Making
Long ago a farmer and his wife had to work hard to make butter. First the farmer had to
milk the cows. Then he let the milk sit until the cream came to the top. He put the cream
into a big wooden churn. The top of the churn had a hole in it for a wooden stick called a
