removed from all higher positions and
participation in the council of Grand
principality of Lithuania" was a problem to
people of Orthodox faith. Thus, the wedge of
religious confrontation was driven into more
or less tolerant interreligious co-existence of
Ukrainians and Lithuanians resulting in
unpleasant consequences.
1440 The restoration of Kyivan princedom during
the reign of Lithuanian prince Cazymyr.
Symeon Olelkevych was the last Kyiv prince.
With his death in 1471 Kyivan princedom
was finally eliminated (the princedom of
Volhynia was finally eliminated in 1452) and
the rule was passed to the Lithuanian voivode.
1447 By the privilege of Cazymyr feudal lords
received the right to judge their own subjects.
1529, Three Lithuanian Statutes, the coded
1566, summary of feudal law, contained
1588 constitutional regulations of state structure,
codes of civil and criminal law. It united all
princedom lands into a single legal space. The
statutes appointed and consolidated numerous
privileges, granted charters and some
elements of customary law. The II Lithuanian
Statute of 1566 reformed the whole system of
instances of authority: 1) szlachta became
equal in rights with prince-magnate
aristocratic upper crust; 2) general szlachta
elective courts were introduced (before
