West End resident charged with arson
An arrest has been made following a series of deliberately set
fires in the West End of the city.
Gilles Joseph Carpentier, age 22, has been charged with four
counts of arson endangering life, four counts of arson damage to
property, one count of break and enter with intent to cause arson,
fine counts of breach of recognizance, one count of possession of
controlled substance and one count of trespass by night.
The Horobin Street resident was scheduled to appear bail
court Thursday.
Sudbury Regional Police Insp. Dan Markievich told Northern
Life he was pleased an arrest had been made.
“It’s because of the excellent co-operation and teamwork
between agencies, the Sudbury Fire Department, the fire marshal’s
office and the assistance of the public.”
A full-time police task force has been dedicated since May to the
West End fires. The arrest came following two deliberately set
fires late Tuesday night.
Around 11:16 pm the fire department was called to a carport fire at
430 Horobin St.
$52,500 in damages
Damage following that blaze was estimated at $31,500.
While at the scene of that fire, police officers spotted a garage
fire around 12:50 am at 446 Horobin St.
Flames caused estimated $21,000 damage.
A tracking dog and a trail of footprints led police to a location
away from the fire scene where a man was attempting to conceal
himself.
Series of fires in area
There have been roughly 15 fires in the neighborhood since
May.
The largest was a midsummer blaze that engulfed a small business
on Hemlock Street.
