influence the politician, unaware of his or her own right to speak up and lobby for a politician’s
interest by writing, calling, or e-mailing between votes to let his or her voice be heard.
We get the government that we allow, so each citizen needs to speak up. One voice can
make a difference, especially when that voice is joined to another voice and another voice. By
remaining silent, the citizen participates in the corruption or misrepresentation of government.
By speaking up, he or she becomes part of the solution and part of the wheels that keep
government going in the right direction, in spite of politics.

                         II. MAIN PART

Task 2. Read and translate the text.
                                                            OBJECTIVES
Objectives are smaller goals that must be completed in order to achieve a long-term
goal. For example, the soccer team that wants to qualify for the annual championship play-offs
(their goal) must win enough games during the season. Winning each game is their objective. If
they win enough games -that is, meet their objectives during the season -the soccer team will
achieve their long-term goal of making the play-offs. Reaching objectives moves you closer to
achieving your long-term goals. If you’re responsible for the performance of others in your
department or work area, you need to be sure your employees understand the long-term goals
everyone is working toward. Then explain how the objectives you’ve set for each employee
help to achieve those long-term goals. Describing how these objectives fit in the larger picture
will give meaning and purpose to each employee’s work. When monitoring the progress of
your employees’ objectives, don’t be too rigid. When someone is meeting objectives like
monthly sales or production goals with aplomb, don’t tell him, “That was great. Now give me
12 more weeks just like that one.” The pressure might be too much and the bar set too high,
leading the person to bail out emotionally. It’s better to encourage the employee incrementally.
Say, “Let’s try for those numbers again next month.”
                         THE BASICS OF OBJECTIVES
Objectives are incremental steps on the way to achieving a long– term goal.
                             - Failing to reach objectives jeopardizes the long– term goal.
                             - Reaching objectives builds confidence.
                             - Completing objectives on time keeps goal achievement on schedule.
                         Task 3. Translate into English.

                         III HOME ASSIGNMENT

Task 4. Translate the following text into Ukrainian
Oil and gas field activities produce drilling waste, which contains drilling mud, rock
waste, and drilling fluids. Wastes include tank bottoms, which are liquids that collect in the
bottom of storage tanks and other production equipment. Other wastes are fluids from treatment
and stimulation activities, oily soil and dirty rags, sand, pit and sump waste, and waste from
                  cleaning pipelines.
The underground rock and sediments that hold oil and gas deposits contain naturally
occurring radioactive materials, including radium, uranium, and thorium. Radium decays to
produce radon, an invisible and odorless radioactive gas. Oil and gas production can leave
