                                                           UNIT 13
                                                     ENVIRONMENT
               1. Read the following dialogue and translate it into Ukrainian.
John: Why are you turning the light off, Sarah?
Sarah: Because we don’t need it now. You shouldn’t leave a light on if you don’t need it – it
               wastes energy.
John: One light won’t make a difference. You shouldn’t worry so much!
Sarah: But it’s very important! When we use more energy, we create more pollution. And
that’s really bad for the environment.
John: OK. I’ll turn the light off. But what else can we do? Turning lights off all the time
               won’t make a big difference.
Sarah: There are lots of things we can do. For example, we can turn lots of things off when
we don’t use them – we can turn off the TV, the computer, the radio...
               John: That’s true.
Sarah: But it’s important to turn things off properly. It’s best to turn them off at the wall.
We waste millions of pounds of electricity every year in this country because we turn things
off with remote controls, not at the wall.
John: How else can we save energy?
Sarah: We can turn the heating down in winter. Even a little bit can save a lot of energy.
And people should put new doors and windows into old houses, so that we don’t waste heat.
               John: Any other clever ideas?
Sarah: Yes! We can save water too! Always turn the tap off when you brush your teeth.
Have a shower instead of a bath. If you do have a bath, you should let someone else use the
               water after you.
John: Never! I don’t want to use your old water! What else?
Sarah: If you have to go somewhere, you should walk or ride a bike instead of using a car.
John: It’s too cold to walk in winter!
Sarah: OK, then you can get a bus or a train. And one of the most important things is to
               recycle.
               John: What’s that, exactly?
Sarah: It means we use our old plastic, metal and paper to make new things, instead of just
wasting it. For example, we can recycle old paper to make new paper, instead of cutting
down more trees. It’s so easy – we can all help the environment. We can melt old plastic to
make new things, and we can reuse old cans. It’s so easy – you’re just too lazy.
