The London Whale
Londoners couldn’t believe their eyes last year when they saw a whale swimming
down the River Thames. People came from their work to try to see the animal. Nobody
knew where the whale was from, but they did know that there was a problem – whales like
to live in the sea and normally only swim downriver if they are lost or ill.
By the end of the day, people were sure that the whale was ill. It was still swimming
up the river, and it had injuries from when it accidentally hit boats in the river. In the end,
everyone knew that the whale needed help. But what could anybody do?
The next day, a charity went to try and help the whale. A team of experts went to find
the whale; they brought special machines to lift it and to put it onto a boat. The plan was to
take the whale back down the river, and put it back in the sea. Millions of people went to the
sides of the river to watch what was happening. Everyone cheered when the experts lifted
the whale onto the boat and went as fast as they could towards the sea.
But the story had a sad ending. The whale was now very ill, and before they could take
the whale to the sea it died, while it was still on the boat. Nobody knows why the whale
came to London, but the experts think that the whale was probably already ill when it
arrived.

Whales – They Need Our Help
There are lots of problems for whales these days. One of the biggest problems is
“whaling”. This is hunting whales, for food or for science. Lots of people think this is
