MODERN HELATRH RESORT ARCHITECTURE
IN MORSZYN IN UKRAINE
Keywords: Morszyn, Ukraine, Marble Palace, Franciszek Kocimski, Marian
Nikodemowicz, Truskawiec, Health Resort
The essay treats of health resort architecture in Ukraine, in the areas
belonging to Poland in the times of the IIRP. The main subject is a town Morszyn
located at the foot of Carpathian Mountains, close to Stryj and Świca rivers.
The sanatorium had its prime in 1920–1934. At that time it was a place
well-known throughout Europe. The resort remained under the shadow of
another popular resort Truskawiec, even though it was considered to be more
exclusive.
The most interesting objects to see are Old Fountain, commonly known as a
‘Mushroom’ (Grzyb) and a pearl of modernist architecture – the Marble Palace.
Morszyn resort buildings are located in the central area of the town, along the
main street. Apart from the ones mentioned above, there are also more objects
built during the interwar period that are worth seeing.
The mineral water pump room was designed by Franciszek Kocimski and
opened in 1900. Another remarkable building is the Marble Palace built in 1935–
1938, designed by Marian Nikodemowicz. It was built on a plan of a horseshoe.
The front facade overlooks the resort park, while the side wings are bent
backwards. The interior was made with 11 different types of marble – hence its
name. It is a classic example of interwar period modern architecture.
