The New York Bay at the mouth of the Hudson River was first
seen by an Italian navigator, Giovanni de Verrazano in 1525. Later,
in 1609, Captain Henry Hudson (died 1611), an intrepid English
navigator and explorer, employed by the Dutch East India Company,
was searching for an easy route to the wealth of the Indies and
China. New York was founded in 1609 AD as New Amsterdam.
