Manhattan is linked with its companion boroughs by a complex
array of bridges, tunnels and ferry lines. Many subway tunnels
carrying trains of the city's rapid-transit lines pass under the rivers.
Two railroad and four vehicular tunnels enter Manhattan
underneath the Hudson and East River and three tubes shuttle
subway trains under the Hudson. Some ferry lines connect
Manhattan and Staten Island. More than 15 automobile bridges span
the East River and the Harlem to connect the boroughs of New
York.
George Washington Bridge spans the Hudson at 179th Street.
One of the world's largest and most handsome suspension bridges it
has two decks and carries 14 lanes of traffic.
Brooklyn Bridge was one of the greatest engineering milestones
of the 19th century. Opened in 1883, it still ranks among the world's
greatest suspension spans. The Bridge gives a fine view of Lower
Manhattan and the Harbor.
Triborough Bridge connects Manhattan with both Queens and
the Bronx.
The busy tollgates of Lincoln Tunnel mark the end of the trip
from country to metropolitan core. After going under the Hudson
River, the cars surface in midtown Manhattan. The Lincoln Tunnel
handles 84,500 vehicles on an average workday.
