unmatched anywhere. And its department stores, specialty shops
and boutiques constitute a shopper's paradise.
In fact, a trip to New York is fun for the family – and an
education, too.
While staying in New York you'll find out a lot of interesting
things. First of all you should know that U.S. cities are often given
nicknames.
New York's nickname - Empire City
New York's population - 7,071,639
New York's area - 956 sq. km
The Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island in New York Harbour
is a National Monument and world-famous symbol of freedom,
which has been greeting generations of new-comers to the U.S.
shores.
The Statue was presented to the U.S.A. by France, and
dedicated on October 28, 1886. It commemorates the alliance
between the two countries during the American Revolution. The
152-foot figure raised on a 150-foot pedestal is the work of
Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), French sculptor. People say, that
finger of the Statue of Liberty is eight feet long and that forty
people can stand inside its head. The first sight of the skyline of
New York from the water is really staggering, and it is just as
impressive when you are in the streets and beside these enormous
skyscrapers that rise up like great cliffs. It takes your breath away
to see them shooting up 70, 80, 100 storeys. They are a sort of
vertical landscape instead of the horizontal one. They are hard
and bare but they give one a feeling of power and have a kind of
cold, hard beauty, and at night, when all the windows are lit up,
the hardness of the daytime is softened, and scene becomes a
fairyland.
