The United States' mosaic of peoples benefits and challenges the
nation. Racial tensions, particularly in larger urban areas and some
southern states, have erupted into violence throughout the country's
history. As a result of the 1960s' Civil Rights movement, however,
many people recognized the inequalities favoring whites more than
other ethnic groups. Since that time, much progress has been made in
extending equality to all. However, Americans generally agree there is
still a lot to do.
