Information of 4 Communicative Types of Sentences
Tasks.
1. Refresh your memory of 4 communicative types of
sentences.
2. Think over the type of intonation they are pronounced
with in the Ukrainian language.
3. Learn the English text concerning the topic.
4. Translate the Ukrainian sentences after the text into
English.
5. Compare Ukrainian and English intonation patterns,
write a summary on the topic “Intonation contours
typical of statements, questions, commands and request
in the English language” (12 sentences).
There are 4 communicative types of sentences:
1. Statements, e.g. I am a student.
2. Questions, e.g. Where do you live?
3. Commands and requests, e.g. Come here!
4. Exclamations, e.g. How pretty!
In English statements almost all the intonation contours may be
used. Pronounced with a falling tone statements sound final,
definite and categoric whereas a rising tone makes them sound
non-categoric or may carry some implication: doubt, hesitation,
etc.:
How old is he? Seven (calm, final, definite).
I think he may try (But I am not sure of it).
Every type questions is pronounced with the intonation
characteristic of it.
