Serial story
Listening comprehension.
Procedure: Using a story that your students can follow easily
enough to get enjoyment out of it, read it aloud to the class in
instalments - two to five minutes' reading in each lesson.
Choose a story with plenty of action, try to stop each time at
a moment of suspense - and don't let too much time elapse
between instalments!
Silent speech
Pronunciation.
Procedure: In order to focus on pronunciation and the contribution
of mouth movement, list on the board words, which will illustrate
the various sounds you would like to concentrate on.
Tell the class to listen as carefully as they can and then,
when you have the students' full attention, 'mouth' a word silently!
The students should try to identify the word by carefully watching
the movement of your mouth. Ask the students to 'mouth' words
for each other derived from the list of words on the board.
Slow reveal
Describing and vocabulary review.
Preparation: You will need a picture large enough for the class to
see.
Procedure: Put the picture behind a piece of paper or in a large
envelope. Reveal the picture in stages. At each stage, ask the class
to identify what they can see and what the whole picture might be.
Encourage differences of opinion and promote discussion.
Variation: A text can be used instead of a picture on an overhead
