                            Proverbs

                            Learning and reviewing English proverbs.

Procedure: Write a well-known English proverb on the board (see
the box for some examples). Discuss its meaning, and compare it
with similar or contrasting proverbs from the students' own
                            culture.

Variation 1: Compare proverbs that appear to contradict one
another (2 and 3, for example in the BOX, or 9 and 10). Can the
students think of circumstances or stories, which might illustrate
                            the truth of either proverb?

Variation 2: From a list of ten or more proverbs, students choose
which they would adopt as a personal motto, or suggest as a motto
