b) The end of a sentence is always recognized by a pause
combined with a moving (nuclear) tone on the most important
word of the sentence. This is the delimiting function of the
intonation.
E.g. I see And’ what about the train?
c) The distinctive function is apparent from the fact that
intonation along may differentiate one communicative type of
a sentence from another or distinguish the actual meaning of
the sentence through some logical prominence .
E.g. You saw her. ( a statement)
You saw her ( a question + surprise)
You saw `her . ( a question)
`You saw her. ( not I)
You `saw her . (not heard)
You saw `her ( not him)
d) The attitudinal meaning can be expressed only by intonation.
E.g. Thank you! (genuine gratitude)
Thank you Mark! (formal politeness)
