LABORATORY EXPERIMENT № 5
DETERMINATION OF THE CARBONATE CONTENT OF
ROCKS BY MEANS OF GASOMETRIC METHOD
(BY MEANS OF АC-4 (АК-4) APPARATUS)
5.1. The objective of the experiment is: to determine the
carbonate content of the rock sample by means of gasometric method
(by means of АC-4 (АК-4) apparatus) and to extend the knowledge
about chemical composition of rocks.
5.2 Definitions
Determination of the rock carbonate content is of a great
practical importance for finding out the conditions of sedimentary
rocks origination, their formation, the formation of secondary voids in
the form of pores or cavities and for substantiation of expediency
for carrying out the acidizing and thermal acidizing of formation.
The carbonate content of rock is the content of salts of
coal acid in it in per cents (that is limestone СаСО , potash

magnesite МgСО and others).

Determination of the rock carbonate content is necessary for the
study of reservoir properties of porous media. It is possible to
compare the magnitudes of porosity, permeability, data about
granulometric composition and initial water saturation of rocks
with the magnitudes of the rock carbonate content. Besides the rock
carbonate content is an additional factor at correlation of formations.
The carbonate content of productive formation rocks is
determined in laboratory by means of core material by gasometric
method which is based on the chemical disintegration of carbonates
forming the rock and measurement of the volume of carbon
dioxide which is released as the result of the following reaction:
СаСО + 2НСl → СаСl + СО ↑ + Н О. (5.1)
