                              paleolithic art;
                              9) the main monuments to this period include
                              sites  near  Mizyn  village  (Chernihiv  region),
                              Mezhyrich (Cherkasy region),  etc.  There are
                              500 monuments known.
            10~6 thous.       Mesolith (the Middle Stone Age):
            B.C.              1)  living  conditions  changed,  the  climate,
                              flora  and  fauna  resembled  the  present  state
                              (the glacier gradually melted);
                              2)  mammoths  and  other  big  animals  as  a
                              primary  hunting  object  disappeared,  it
                              stimulated  the  invention  of  the  first
                              mechanism – arms of mechanical action (bow
                              and arrows);
                              3)  instruments  of  labour  became  more
                              elaborate:  they  were  made  to  be  small
                              (microlites),  1  mm  thick  and  used  as
                              arrowheads,  spearheads  harpoon  heads.  Big
                              instruments  of  labour  were  also  used
                              (macrolites) – flint axes, adzes and so-called
                              insert  instruments  made  of  bone,  flint  and
                              wood;
                              4)  appearance  of  geometrical  shapes  is  a
                              peculiar feature of mesolith;
                              5) gradual domestication of wild animals took
                              place  –  the  dog  was  the  first  animal
                              domesticated;
                              6) hunting still remained the main occupation
                              of  the  man,  gathering  was  present  in
                              improved  forms,  fishing  gained  in  a  great
                              importance but it was not of mass (collective)
