high. The wide avenues are lined with old shady trees and in parks
there are many beautiful flowers.
It is not largest city in the USA, for it cannot compare in size
with cities like New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit and Los
Angeles, which have more than a million inhabitants. In the
political sense, however, it is the center of the republic and the
most important city in the USA.
If you are interested in the law-marking center of the US go to
the Capitol, with its great Hall of Representatives and Senate
Chamber.
There are many places of interest near the Capitol. You can
walk around to the back of the Capitol and leek across Union
Square, all the way down to the Washington Monument and
beyond to the Lincoln Memorial. From the Capitol Pennsylvania
Avenue leads to the right to the White House. The tourists usually
make a tour of the White House to the see its rooms and grounds.
Many people come to Washington by planes and by trains.
The planes land on two airfields – the National and Friendship
Airports. The city’s pride is the Union Railroad Station. It is bigger
than the Capitol itself. 20 train tracks enter the station on the upper
level and 12 on the lower. It can hold an army of fifty thousand
men.
