GLOSSARY OF AMERICAN TERMS
apartment complex
a group of similar buildings containing a variety of different-sized
apartments and managed by one company. Apartment complexes
often include facilities such as laundry rooms, tennis courts, and
swimming pools.
appraisal
on evaluation that is done to determine the value of a property and
whether it can be approved for a mortgage.
armoire
a large piece of wooden furniture used for storing clothes;
wardrobe.
carport
a space next to a house for a car to be parked in, that has a roof but
has posts instead of walls.
condominium, condo
an apartment building or complex in which the individual units are
owned by the people who live in them, or one of these apartments.
cord
the flexible, electric cable with a plug at the end for connecting an
appliance to the power source; lead.
covenant
an agreement that someone signs in order to buy or build a house
in a planned community, in which they agree to rules about
property use, building restrictions, etc.
escrow
an amount of money, a deed, or a piece of property that is held as
security until the purchase of a house is complete.
garbage disposal
an electric device that gets rid of organic waste such as vegetable
peelings by grinding it and flushing it down the kitchen sink.
ground
to connect a piece of electrical equipment to the ground in order to
make it safer; to earth something.
laundry room
a room in a house for the washing machine and dryer and
everything else to do with laundry. In an apartment building or
complex, it's a room containing coin-operated washing machines
and dryers for the use of the residents.
