                               Organization at the international level (the BIPM)
                               With the volume of commercial transactions expanding and with
                           science and techniques developing in the 18th century, the necessity
                           of making sure of the unity of measurements was powerfully felt by
                           the middle of the 19th century. Difficulties were caused by the use of
                           many  of  standards  in  commercial  and  cultural  exchanges,  and  the
                           Convention of the Metre (20th May 1875) advocated a commitment to
                           found and maintain, on a common foundation, an establishment whose
                           initial aims would be:
                               – to make sure that the metric system was used worldwide, while
                           undertaking  the  realization  and  the  upkeep  of  the  (international)
                           materialized standards of the meter and the kilogram,
