11 c Complete the following text using the correct form of the words (1-6) in Exercise 11 b.
You will need to use some words more than once.

Protecting the environment. Neither the belt nor the gearless machine, with its permanently
sealed bearings, requires any lubrication so the Gen2 system is cleaner for environment. The
highly (1) energy-efficient gearless machine? With its permanent-magnet
synchronous motor, (2) power consumption by as much as 50 percent over
                  (3) geared machines and 15 percent over other machines with permanent-
                  magnet motors of axial construction.

Reliable by design. Long-lasting flat bels , smooth , crowned sheaves and minimal moving parts
in the gearless machine dramatically (4) wear and increase durability and
efficiency . To further (5) reability and safety, Otis developed the Pulse tm
system, which continually monitors the status of the belt's steel cords. Unlike visual inspections
of (6) steel ropes , the Pulse tm system automatically detect and reports belt
faults to maintenance personnel for rapid response , providing owners with greater peace of mind
. With flat belt technology, Otis has created a (7) system that (8)
the need for a machine room , is quiet , clean , reliable and economical, and easy to install and
                  maintain.

12a Complete the following tips on emphasizing technical advantages using the words in
                  the box.
                  Conventional; eliminated; enhanced; reduced; superior.

When describing technical advantages, it’s useful to emphasise ...
a (1) performance, compared with the older model of the same product.
                  b negative issues that have been (2) , or completely (3) .
c special features that differentiate the technology from (4) systems.
d performance levels that make the technology (5) to the competition.

12b Stefan, an engineer, is briefing some sales colleagues on the advantages of a new pump
design. Read the briefing and match the tips (a-d) in Exercise 12a to the extracts (1 -4).

                  Extract 1 Extract 2 Extract 3 Extract 4

1 Stefan: So, as you can see from this cross-section, we’ve come up with a completely unique
profile. It’s exclusive to this company and unlike anything else on the market.

2 Stefan: One of the key advantages of this new form is that it dramatically reduces vibration,
which was always a problem before. Obviously, machines like these can never be entirely free
from vibration but the new design runs extremely smoothly.

3 Stefan: Another advantage of the new profile is that it’s considerably lighter, due to the
reduced area of the overall section. So compared with our previous range, it’s highly efficient,
especially in applications that require continual starting and stopping, where low inertia is
                  important.

4 Stefan: We’re still conducting long-term reliability tests, but trials so far suggest the design is
exceptionally durable, primarily as a result of the low vibration levels. We expect it to be
significantly more reliable than rival units that are on the market, which is obviously an
