LABORATORY EXPERIMENT № 7
DETERMINATION OF THE SATURATION OF ROCK
BY OIL, GAS AND WATER
7.1 The objective of the experiment is: to study the concept
of oil, water and gas saturation of rock and to determine oil, water
and gas saturation factors of the rock sample.
7.2 Definitions
Saturation is defined as the fraction or per cent of the pore volume
occupied by a particular fluid (oil, water or gas).
The saturation of rock by oil, gas and water is characterized by
oil saturation factor S , water saturation factor S and gas saturation
o
w
factor S
.
g
Oil saturation factor S is the ratio of the volume of oil which
o
occupies pores V to the total volume of pores in the rock V pores :

Water saturation factor S is the ratio of the volume of water

For the rock sample the following equations are correct:
S + S + S = 1, S = 1 – (S + S ). (7.4)

The saturation of each individual phase ranges between 0 and
100 per cent. The sum of the saturations is 100 %.
Oil saturation factor, water saturation factor and gas saturation
factor of the rock are determined in per cents of the volume of pores.
