measurements. The acceleration of the vehicles is often hundreds or
thousands of times stronger than the changes being measured.
Microgravimetry is a rising and important branch developed on
the foundation of classical gravimetry. Microgravity investigations are
carried out in order to solve various problems of engineering geology,
mainly location of voids and their monitoring. Very detailed
measurements of high accuracy can indicate voids of any origin,
provided the size and depth are large enough to produce gravity effect
stronger than is the level of confidence of relevant gravity signal.
Task 3. Answer the questions to the text.
1. What does the geodetic gravimetry deal with?
2. What is the basic content of geodetic gravimetry?
3. What is the fundamental problem of geodetic gravimetry?
4. What units of measurement are used in geodetic gravimetry?
5. What is the most common instrument used for measuring
gravity?
6. What are the main characteristics of modern gravimeters?
7. How are gravimeters used in transportation and navigation?
Task 4. Define whether the following statements are true or
false and translate them. Correct the false ones according to
the text.
1. The basic content of satellite geodesy is the theories and
methods for determining the external field of the potential of the force
of the Earth’s gravity from measurements on the Earth’s surface and
from astronomical and geodetic materials.
2. The fundamental problem of geodetic gravimetry is reduced to
the derivation of the perturbing potential.
3. Gravity is usually measured in minutes.
4. An instrument used to measure gravity is known as a
gravimeter.
5. Stability an important property of a gravimeter, allows the
monitoring of gravity changes.
6. The study of gravity changes belongs to marine geodesy.
7. Zero-length springs follow Hooke's Law, and don’t have a
force proportional to their length.
