                                      Exercises

Exercise 1. Tell, whether the following statements are
           true or false
                1. When purified, it would burn in a lamp with a much
brighter cleaner light than whale oil, but it was more expensive.
                2. The Pennsylvania Rock Oil Company, Connecticut, had
leased some land near Titusville, Pennsylvania.
                3. Drake knew everything about the oil business.
                4. Colonel Drake decided to try a new method used by salt
makers who, instead of digging a large hole with pick and shovel
drilled a very small hole by pounding into the ground a length of
steel pipe with a sharp drill screwed to the end of it.
                5. The drill sank slowly through the soft surface earth until it
hit bedrock and began biting into it.
                6. The Colonel's Drake drill had gone down through layer
after layer of rocks and sand and mud but it didn’t reach the pool
of oil imprisoned between layers of dense rock.
