The psychology of editorial work has not yet become the subject of special
scientific research, and, considering the psychological preconditions for editing,
we are forced to rely on the general provisions formulated by psychologists as a
result of the study of complex forms of human activity. Editing with full reason
can be attributed to one of these forms, and the general scheme of the editor's work
can be represented as follows:
- obtaining information;
- task setting;
- creating a model of behavior and the expected results;
- actions and results that are relevant to these actions.
In terms of editorial work, this scheme receives a specific content. The first
of its components is the acquaintance of the editor with the author's work. The
second is to set up the editing task. It can be dictated and refined both by external
circumstances and by the qualities of the material itself. In advance, an amount, the
genre, the need to emphasize the connection with the current events, the form of
contact with the reader can be planned, the kind of editing can be defined. Then the
editor decides how he will act - the third component of the schema is deciphered.
The editor may send the material for refinement, may work on the text with the
author or choose a methodology that, in his opinion, is the most rational in this
case. Visible actions of the editor, including the process of editing the text, only the
last, final stage of editing.
The psychology of editorial work is extremely complicated. This is due to
the complexity of its object - a text that captures the result of complex human
activity, the originality of communicative relationships that arise between the
author, the editor and the reader, the specifics of editorial work, in which the
creative principle is combined with the analytical. In the light of these features, the
text is the main object of editing.
