C Even if we haven’t, it doesn’t matter, as there is probably plenty of room for both books
               and screens.
               D To publishers, this meant the arrival of the e-book!
               E Would you be happy to get your newspaper on the screen, or do you still prefer turning
               those pages?
               F Did you know that we can read 50 % more quickly on paper than we can on a computer
               screen?
               G It looks as if people are already interested in the general idea.
               H We like to decorate our rooms with them, too.
               I More than half of today’s newspapers now have websites.

               2. How do you keep yourself informed: newspapers, magazines, Internet, TV, radio, other?
               3. Are you a bookworm? What do you like reading? What form of books do you prefer:
               hardcover? paperback? e-book? Give reasons. Think about: cost, convenience, binding.
                     I prefer reading paperbacks because they are cheap and easy to carry.
               4. Find the phrasal verbs in the text, which mean: think of, place inside, remove, do, move
               at the same speed, replace. Then, explain the words in bold and suggest synonyms for the
               highlighted words.
               5. Which of the following best describes the author’s main point? Give reasons. How far do
               you agree with the author?
                  A Books are old fashioned.
                  B The printed word will never die.
                  C E-books will replace paper books.
               6. Choose the arguments in favour of electronic media.
                  a) access information without leaving your desk;
                  b) carry it around with you;
                  c) take longer to read;
                  d) good graphics and layout;
                  e) it is cheaper;
                  f) can fit in your pocket;
                  g) get up-to-date information instantly;
                  h) read something over and over;
                  i) lasts a long time, doesn’t need replacing.
               7. Write your comments on the following statements:
                      “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and
                                                                                    digested’. (Francis Bacon)
                                      “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body”. (Richard Steele)
                                                        About Books
                     At Christmas I often get presents, but there is one present I always like to get, and that
               is a book. It doesn’t matter what kind of book it is. It can be a story book, a book of poems
               or a book of plays; I enjoy them all.
                     I get some of my books from the Public Library. There is a very good one in the town
               where I live and the librarian knows a lot about literature. She gives me advice about
               literature and helps me to get the books that I want. But I buy quite a lot of books too,
               particularly those that I have read before and have enjoyed. I like to have them in my home
               so that I can read them (or at least some of them) not only once, but time and again. I like to
               sit in the room where my books are, and, even if I am not reading, I like to look at the books
               on my shelves and to feel that I have my friends round me. (After L.Hill)
