points, the so-called "light ends", vaporize first. The less volatile compounds
follow. As the resulting cloud of vapour gradually cools the different compounds
liquefying one at a time can be drawn off separately.
At oil refineries this initial cooling and separating are done in tall towers
called pipe stills. In a pipe still, liquefying hydrocarbons are drawn off in groups.

The group containing hydrocarbons with boiling points varying between about 30

C and about 215 C is called straight-run gasoline.
