II Emphasising the importance of precautions
5a Dorian Food Processing is currently standardising safety procedures at its plants
around the world. Read the following extract from the contents page of the company’s new
safety documentation and answer the following questions.
1 What is meant by LV and HV electrical maintenance operations?
2 What kinds of electrical maintenance might be carried out in a factory?
LV & HV ELECTRICAL MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS
Part 1 Identifying and designating Restricted Areas
(switchboards, transformer stations, areas with exposed conductors)
Part 2 Authorising maintenance
- The role of the Electrical Supervisor
- Procedures for issuing Permits to
Work
Part 3 Isolating and energising circuits
- Lock-Out Procedure
- Temporary Warning Notices on
switchboards
b Read Stephanie explaining the safety procedures
to Lin, the plant manager in Beijing. What is meant
by the following phrases?
1 restricted areas
2 a permit to work
3 the electrical supervisor
4 the lock-out procedure
c ►7.3 Complete the following extracts from the conversation by underlining the phrases
that give the strongest emphasis. Read the conversation again and check your answers.
7 Restricted areas are places where a serious danger is present. So it’s essential that these
should be kept locked at all times / all the time.
8 Under no circumstances should anyone / Nobody should under any circumstances
be able to access them ...
9 ... it's important that permits are issued each time / every single time someone enters ...
10 And it's crucial that there's just one / just a single key to each restricted area.
11 Then, while they're working, it’s vital / it’s advisable that they keep the key on them ...
Stephanie: Restricted areas are places where a serious danger is present. So it’s essential that
these should be kept locked at all times. Under no circumstances should anyone be able to
access them, unless they have a permit to work, in other words, a written form giving permission
to work in the restricted area.
Lin: And permits to work, and the keys to restricted areas, can only be issued by the electrical
supervisor?
Stephanie: That's right. So that one individual is responsible for electrical safety for the whole
plant. Only that person is authorised to issue permits to work.
Lin: Presumably, it’s important that permits are issued every single time someone enters a
restricted area - each time they do a new job, they need a new permit.
Stephanie: Exactly. They shouldn’t be issued for any longer than a full shift.
Lin: OK.
