11. THE SHOES AND THE MEASURE
There was once a man whose shoes were worn out so he
wanted to have a new pair made. He meant to send a boy to the
shoemaker to order the new shoes. The shoemaker lived about
three miles away. So the man made a measure of his foot, and gave
it to the boy. But, for some reason, the boy was not able to go, and
the man decided to go himself. So the man started to walk to the
village where the shoemaker lived.
When he was halfway to the village, he stopped. He said to
himself, «I have forgotten the measure». He went back to his
house to get it, and then went on to the shoemaker's. He was very
surprised when the shoemaker told him that the measure was not
needed. For, of course, the man's own foot was more useful than
the measure of his foot.
