Pollution
Pollution is the damage done to the environment by
harmful substances. Pollution comes in many forms, from litter
and noise to acid rain and oil spills. Pollution affect the air, land,
and water, and may even be changing the composition of the
earth’s atmosphere.
Cars, factories, and power plants pump gases, smoke, soot,
and chemicals into the air. These pollutants are left over when
fossil fuels are burned to create energy. Polluted air is harmful to
breathe, not only for people, but also for other animals and plants.
Air pollution has been linked to illness, brain damage, and death.
Some pollution in the air fall back to the earth in acid rain.
Scientists also fear that air pollution might add to global warming.
Machines, traffic, airplanes, boom boxes, car horns, alarms,
and sirens make loud sounds. These sounds can add up to noise
pollution. Noise pollution can make people grouchy and can harm
their ability to hear.
