provides  a  strong,  stable  and  lightweight  leg  structure  that  can
                            withstand wave and wind action.
                                   A  jack-up  with  columnar  (fig.  1.2)  or  tubular
                            (fig. 1.3) legs is cheaper to manufacture than an open-truss
                            design, but it is less stable. A columnar platform is a liability in
                            extreme weather conditions and of little use in water deeper than
                            200 feet.
